Welcome to another edition of my movie/drama review. I remember watching a very nice Japanese drama serial which was shown in Channel 8 way back in 2001 or 2002. It was actually produced in the year 2000. This Japanese drama had a simple plot but it remained one of the most memorable drama serial which I had watched. The drama which I am referring to is Food Fight.
Food Fight starred Tsuyoshi Kusanagi from SMAP and the lovely Kyoko Fukada. The plot is simple. Ihara Mitsuru (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi's screen character) is an orphan who works as an office cleaner, or a nicer way to put it, custodian. Well, not actually. Though he is a custodian, he is also an unbeaten food fight champion. The underground food fight competition pays handsomely as the betters are wealthy businessmen and politicians. He donates all his winnings to the orphanage that he grew up in because he is a caring and loving person, especially to the children in the home. The thing is no one in the orphanage knows his secret identity. He donates the winnings to his home as an anonymous person. What would a movie or drama be without a female lead? Kyoko Fukada acts as Tamura Manami, who is a sweet and pleasant volunteer at the home. Throughout the series, there exists an onscreen romance/tension between the two and she nearly finds out his identity on several occasions.
Each episode deals with an issue or conflict regarding family, love and life that concerns the characters in the series. The food fight competitor is always related to the story in the particular episode. As Mitsuru struggles to come to terms with the issue, the competition often begins with him trailing the competitor before he comes to terms with the issue during the interval, which turns the tide, causing him to win the competition by a close call. He would finish off by telling his competitor, "My stomach is as big as the universe".
I like this show very much because it is a very pleasant show. Though slightly unrealistic, it teaches values which I think is quite apt and meaningful, the most significant one being giving without expecting anything back in return. Mitsuru is always smiling and calm even when he is under pressure while Manami is ever so lovely. What happens at the end? Will they ever be together? That's for me to know and for you to find out. I give this drama serial an 8/10.
